Light painting with your iPhone

Light painting has always been something that never ceased to amaze me. So i started asking myself if this is also possible with an iPhone. Now the problem is that the iPhone cant extend its exposure time, making it impossible to do light painting with your standart camera app.
Luckily, there are a few app's out there that can "fake" this effect, for example "Magic Shutter" (2,39€).










You only need a few things to do light painting with your iPhone:

• "Magic Shutter" (or any other slow shutter app)
• Flashlights or any other light source, if possible in many colors (watch out that they are not too bright, since the iPhone's sucks up a bit too much light for my taste)
• A dark room or any other dark place
• Some good ideas

Thats it!
Now all you need to do is get into a dark place, start "Magic Shutter", select "light paintin" and press "shoot". The app itself has a link to a video that shows you everything perfectly, but here is the short version. Now you just go infront of your iPhone's camera, and use your light source of choice as a paintbrush. Just aim the light at your camera and start drawing. If you want to stop, just hold your hand infront of your flashlight, go back to your iphone and press the shoot-button again.

Here are some (unfortunately very poor) examples of what some people would call "wanna-be" or "complete and utter failure". Well in this case its just what i "painted" within 10 minutes:

My conclusion:

Light painting on the iPhone is quite fun and you should really give it a shot if you are interested . Unfortunately, the results aren't that amazing because sometimes it isn't focused (and since you are infront of your camera you will only find out when you are dont painting) and the lines look more like badly connected dots. Still, for sending you partner or someone else a self-painted heart it is worth the 2,39€ and the fun you had, even though you should bring some patience.
