PhotoForge 2 - App review

PhotoForge 2 is one of the most popular photo-editing apps on the App store. Some people say that it is the true "Photoshop" on iOS. Well time to check out if thats true and if i might ditch my loved Snapseed for it!

When you first start the app, you recognize the sheer amount of tools and effects. I didnt know where to start off , so i started zooming in and found out that you can zoom until you only see pixels. This is already something cool i wouldn't have expected.
After taking a look at all the different tools this app offers, i can already say that this app has something to offer for everyone. Whether you are a serious amateur who can sit hours infront of one picture, trying to get the best out of it or if you are a casual iphoneograph who enjoys editing his new picture with some small adjustements.

So lets take a look at each one of these tools:

Image-manipulation adjustments:
Here is all the basic stuff you know from other editing apps. We've got saturation, contrast, brightness, etc. Each one of these has a slider, helping you to adjust the intensity exactly how much you want. The time it takes for the app to adjust the picture is ok, even though its kind of slow compared to Snapseed. But it also has some more advanced stuff like CMYK/RGB/LAB effects. These dont come with sliders but with a graph. More experienced users love this since you can adjust every small detail with it. For everyone else there are the autoadjustment that give you a balanced effect that will look good most of the time.

FX and filters:
Photoforge 2 comes along with 25 filters and fx. Now while i probably wont use more than 4 of them since the rest is not that great in my opinion, they are not that interesting for me. But since this is more a matter of taste, i am not going to talk about them too much. Now i am not saying they are bad, god forbid! I just think most of them are cool to play around for a while, but i wont use them for my pictures.
Another cool thing i want to add here is that you can undo every adjustment you made, even every single filter you have applied. Thats really neat if you want to check out every single fx for one picture.
Here, you will also find Pop! Cam, an in-app-purchased tool that gives you tons of filters that make your photo look like you took it with an old camera from the 80's. You can try it out for free if you want.

Standart tools and layers:
Ok now you probably dont want to me talk about all that basic stuff like cropping, resizing and all that. Yes Photoforge 2 can do those things, and yes it does it pretty well.
But here comes one the of coolest things in this whole app: You can add layers. Yeah thats right, you are able to add as many layers to your picture as you wish and edit and rearrange them. You can also blend and mask them if there is just one part of your layer that you actually want on your original photo.

My thoughts on Photoforge 2:
Photoforge 2 is a fantastic app that does everything you want your favourite editing-app to do. Its perfect for casual and more professional users. The only thing i can don't like that much is the interface. Not everything is that perfectly clear and well explained at first sight. But you should totally take your time with this app and try out every single slider and tool, since you certainly won't regret buying this app after taking some time with it. Another feature it is missing is a compare-button like Snapseed has.
But for 2.49€ this is really an amazing app that every serious amateur photograph should carry around on his iPhone.
